Each community selected for a well has a water commitee established to help with the preparations for drilling and well management. A water well in some situations will save women 8 hours of walking for 20 litres of water! |
The Turkana Region in Kenya is referred to by their own country as "the forgotten people" For centuries they have survived as nomadic herdsmen, living in extreme desert conditions. Today rivers are dry. Water is scarce. By providing water wells, the cycle of endless poverty is now replaced with hope. Clean water is an essential for life. Underground water is available between 100 and 350 feet in most locations. Water brings life to a community. Water also offers the potential for garden crops to help become drought resistant.
